Third-placed finish for Andrew and The Star

Two pubs in the region are celebrating after being named in the top five of the Budweiser Budvar Top 50 Gastropub Awards.

The Star at Harome, run by Andrew Pern, was third and East Yorkshire’s Pipe and Glass Inn, run by James Mackenzie, was fourth. Both chefs are former students of Yorkshire Coast College. The winner was Hand & Flowers run by Tom Kerridge, a regular of Great British Menu and Master Chef, and runner up was Stephen Harris at the Sportsman.

The award for the Pipe and Glass follows the news last autumn that the restaurant had retained its Michelin star for the fourth consecutive year. It was also Michelin Gastropub of the Year for 2012.

James Mackenzie who, with his wife Kate, owns the Pipe and Glass, said: “It’s fantastic to be up there in such elevated company.

“Tom Kerridge at the Hand & Flowers is an outstanding chef, and a worthy winner. Stephen Harris at the Sportsman is a fantastic runner-up.

“And I was head chef at the Star at Harome before opening the Pipe and Glass, so its chef-owner Andrew Pern is both a friend and mentor. The Pipe and Glass may be Michelin-starred, but I’ve always said that running a good local pub is equally important to me, so this accolade is particularly pleasing.”
