Helmsley could be in line for a share of a £600,000 funding bid which has been made to mark next year’s 800th anniversary celebrations of the Magna Carta.

The town is one of a handful in the country which has direct links with the famous Greater Charter of the Liberties of England, through Robert de Ross, the town’s baron at the time. Cllr Martin Vander Weyer, who is leading a planned celebration programme in Helmsley, said the Magna Carta Barons Association was awaiting a decision on the bid which would be used to fund the events in June 2015. The council has also given Helmsley in Business £100 towards their plans for the celebrations.
