Helmsley is to buy a facsimile parchment copy of the Magna Carta as part of the town’s celebrations for the 800th anniversary of the signing of the charter by King John.

The town council agreed to spend £150 on the copy which will probably be hung in the Town Hall, said councillors.

Cllr Martin Vander Weyer said it was likely that Helmsley would get a £20,000 share of a grant given to The Barons Association which is staging the landmark celebration, featuring the 25 towns and villages who guaranteed the observance of the Magna Carta. Robert de Ros, was the Baron of Helmsley and Sheriff of Cumberland.
