A RACCOON is the latest recruit to Pickering Town Council's Pride in Pickering campaign.

Town Cllr Julie Hepworth is using a glove puppet to take the "Stop the Drop" litter message into local schools.

She tells the children the "naughty raccoon" drops litter when he shouldn't and shows them posters which have the message that litte
r has not got legs so can't get into litter bins by itself.

Cllr Hepworth, who heads the town council's litter group, has been visiting school assemblies and classrooms to explain what Pride in Pickering is all about and to enlist young supporters for "Stop the Drop."

Meanwhile the town's Hope 08 team, who did a local litter pick in August, are planning another on Saturday November 8. The volunteers will meet at the United Reformed Church on Hungate and cover "grot spots" which local residents have identified.

Cllr Hepworth, who will also be there, said anyone is welcome to join them.

She said: "Last time we had 27 people out and they collected 15 bags of rubbish in an hour. Let's make it even better this time."

Gloves, bags and pickers will be provided by Ryedale Council, which will also collect the rubbish afterwards.

Cllr Hepworth added that anyone with a "grot spot" that needs sorting out can give her a call on (01751) 472 686.
