HELMSLEY Table Tennis Club Cadet under-15s A and B teams travelled to Billingham to play in round four of the North of England National Cadet League.
Needing only 11 games out of possible 27 to win the league, the A team of Edward Fambely, Charlie Allott, Finn Needham and Luke Lunn started the day with a 9-0 victory over a depleted Sedgefield team.

The next game was to be the toughest of the
day against the Helmsley B team, Jack Moody, Johnny Goode and Alistair Quinn.

Jack made Edward fight for his victory but then faced Charlie whose heavy and consistent topspin set him up for a comfortable 3-0 win.
Johnny and Alistair fought hard but couldn't break down the triumphant A team.

The closest game was Jack versus Luke which went to five sets, Luke clinching the fifth, 11-7 to make the final match score 9-0.

The final A team match was against the Sedgefield team again (as they missed a previous round) and the score proved the same, 9-0.

So a victorious A team waited 45 minutes for their B team-mates to finish a scintillating match against a strong Northumbria side.

Alistair won an extremely close match in the fifth set and Jack won all three to set up a potential victory.

Johnny was at 4-4 in the fifth set before a flurry of good shots by his opponent left him with a mountain to climb and he lost 11-6.

The match finally went to Northumbria five sets to four.

The medal ceremony was completed, crowning Helmsley TT Club A as the North of England National Cadet League Champions.

They will also represent Ryedale School in the National schools teams under-13 boys final at Hinckley on Saturday.
