PICKERING'S Richard Buck has booked a place in the Great Britain squad for this year's Olympic Games in Beijing.
The 400 metre runner must still prove his fitness though after shaking off a nasty stomach virus picked up at last month’s European Cup.

Should he achieve this then he will take his place in the 4x400 metres relay team alongside Michael Bingham, Martyn Rooney, Andrew Steele and Robert Tobin.

The 21-year-old finished sixth in the semi-finals of the Aviva National Championships at the weekend as he continues his rehabilitation.

Previous to that he won his heat in 47.64 seconds - the fastest time of Friday night.

He said: “I have been named in the squad, I now just need to confirm my fitness before the squad meets up in August.

“It has been a frustrating time for me really, but I am feeling fine now.

“I picked up a really bad virus in Annecy, it had been affecting a lot of other athletes and their performances.

“It is just a matter of taking things slow from now. The only problem is the fact that I have been missing my training.

“I have just about recovered now, but it is a matter of building the endurance back up again.”

Should everything go well for the Leeds Met student then he is really looking forward to making his Olympic bow.

He added: “This is the thing I have been working towards since I started running.

“It will be a real dream come true and at the same time an honour to represent Great Britain at the Olympics.

Buck is no stranger to national competition though, having already shone for his country in a number of events.

This started with a bronze in the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia, before impressing in both the World Student Games and the World Athletics Championships, which took place in Osaka, Japan.

Buck started the indoor season well this year, bagging two golds, before helping Britain to fifth in the World Indoor Championships.
