Five-star Hall fails to halt Fylingdales in 11-goal thriller

Newlands Reserves striker Eric Hall ended up on the losing side despite scoring five goals on his Scarborough News Sunday League Division Two debut at Fylingdales Reserves, the hosts winning 6-5.

Hall handed the visitors an early lead but a Ben Thompson double put the villagers in front, further goals from Si Forde and Sam Russell putting Fylingdales in charge, leading 4-1 at the interval.

Sam Bailey added a fifth for the hosts, but Hall banged in three goals to pull the score back to 5-4, Adam Lorains netting the crucial sixth goal for Neil Purves’ side.

Tom Shrimpton was the Fylingdales man of the match, while Hall was the star for Newlands, super-sub Lewis Weller also making a big impact on the right of midfield.

Crown Tavern gave their promotion ambitions a boost with a 5-1 win at Alma.

Matty Fairline and Dave Barber smacked in a brace of goals apiece for Tavern with Steve Molloy also netting.

Man of the match Neal Castleton also smacked the cross bar with a 35-yard scorcher after beating three Alma defenders after a run which started in his own penalty area.

Michael McAuley netted to bring Alma level midway through the first half to make it 1-1 at half-time but Tavern pulled clear after the break.

Left-back Danny Vasey was the man of the match for Phil Clothier’s team.

Trafalgar Reserves stretched their lead to five points at the top of the table after earning a 2-0 home win against Roscoes Bar.

Tom Scales netted the first goal for Mikey Barker’s side on the half-hour mark, a great finish from an acute angle by the hot-shot.

Traf added a second in the 65th minute when sub Dave Bell converted a penalty. Grant Elwell having been brought down in the area.

Chris Garton pulled off a couple of good saves to maintain Traf’s lead, while the Traf man of the match was Sam Pickard in central midfield.

Liam Rowley and Martin Hadrick stood out for Roscoes.

Trafalgar’s first team also earned a win, securing a 5-1 success at top-flight rivals Heslerton in the Scarborough FA Sunday Cup.

Neil Thomas scored the only goal of the first half, the striker turning neatly and smashing a cracking shot across the home keeper.

Central midfielder Gary Thomas doubled Traf’s lead after the break with a 25-yard strike.

Georgie Rose then scored the goal of the game to seal Traf’s place in the next round, racing from the halfway line and taking the ball past three Heslerton defenders before hammering his effort into the top corner.

Sean Exley then made it 4-0, and Billy Bown pulled a goal back for the hosts with a free-kick, before Exley’s second made the final score 5-1.

Gary Thomas was the man of the match for Traf, while Bown and centre-back Aidan Smith were the star men for Heslerton.
