Pier take top spot in Saturday League division one

West Pier took top spot in the Scarborough News Saturday League first division with a 6-1 home win against struggling Hunmanby United, while Newlands’ hopes of defending their title were dented by a 2-1 home loss against rivals Filey Town.

Tommy Barker and Luke Delve banged in two goals apiece for Pier, with Will Jenkinson and Ali Caw also on target, the latter scoring the goal of the game with a cracking effort.

Chris Nelson weighed in with three assists for the hosts, with Paul Provins and Mikey Pickering the stand-out players for the victors.

Olly Milner netted for a determined United side, with Milner and 16-year-old Tom Crawford sharing the man-of-the-match award.

Filey Town fought back from 1-0 down to earn a 2-1 win at defending champions Newlands Park.

Neither side could break the deadlock in a keenly-fought first 45 minutes, and Dan Freer opened the scoring for Park early in the second half after fine play from Danny Jenkinson.

An injury to the latter caused the hosts to lose their shape and Town took advantage, levelling in the 70th minute when sub James Pinder netted with only his fourth touch after coming on as a sub for his first game in 11 weeks, forcing home after good approach play from Chris Duley and Danny Price.

Six minutes later Ricky Tomlinson fired in a rebound after a Cameron Dobson effort was only partially cleared.

Jay Taylor hailed the whole team rather than single out a man of the match, this win keeping their title hopes alive.

Midfielder Mike Wilson and left-winger Freer were the star players for Shaun Mancrief’s team.

Seamer Sports won 4-1 at home to Sleights, the third win on the bounce for Paddy Parke’s troops.

The hosts opened the scoring when Joe Gallagher flicked in a corner from Travis Wood, and they made it 2-0 when Danny Bradbury took on three defenders then fired a 20-yard shot past the Sleights keeper.

Jamie Hartley headed in another corner at the far post after the interval to seal the win for Sports and Bradbury’s second, a clever finish after a well-timed run, wrapped it up.

James Fawcett scored a consolation from the penalty spot after Mike Dent had been fouled, scant reward for a visiting side who played their part in a well-fought match.

Hartley and Bradbury were the star men for Seamer.

USB twice battled from a goal down to win 3-2 at Ayton in an early kick-off.

The basement club opened the scoring after five minutes through Brad Parkin, with Liam Vasey levelling, then Dan Pickard made it 2-1 at the break to the villagers.

USB’s man of the match Charles Battye levelled after the interval and Tim Moore finished off a breakaway to claim all three points for David Oxley’s team.

Ayton were very unfortunate to come away without a point as they spurned a string of chances to equalise, and could easily have won if the youthful hosts had not been so wasteful in front of goal.

Whitby Fisherman’s Society also came back from a goal down to claim a 2-1 win at home to second-from-bottom Ryedale Sports Club.

The hosts could have taken the lead early on but missed a penalty conceded by Ryedale keeper Matthew Todd, and soon afterwards the Pickering side went ahead when Martin Myers slotted the ball under Fisherman’s keeper Paul Cull.

Ten minutes before half-time Pete Scaife levelled for the hosts and just before the hour mark the turnaround was complete when Neil Hart notched a second for the hosts.

Paul Tose was man of the match for Mark Storr’s victorious side, while Ben Thompson and Harry Reed shared the plaudits for the visitors.

Edgehill booked their spot in the semi-finals of the Coastal Shellfish League Cup with a 2-0 home win against a determined Duchess outfit.

Liam Cooper opened the scoring 10 minutes before half-time and the same player sealed the win with his second, the man of the match showing neat control before firing into the bottom corner.

Luke Midgley was named as the Duchess man of the match in a strong display by Paul McBean’s team, while Edgehill boss Steven Clegg also singled out the second division team’s Chris Watson and Tim Jackson for praise.

Cayton Corinthians moved into the final four of the Trophy Trader League Trophy with a 5-2 home win against a much-improved FC Rosette.

The visitors opened the scoring after just 10 minutes with a clever 25-yard lob from young striker Sean Thornton after a mistake in the home defence, but within 10 minutes Cayton were on level terms as centre-back Tom Sixsmith headed in a cross.

Wing-back Jake McAleese put Cayton ahead before half-time and despite a plucky display from the Newby team, a header from centre-back Harry Holden put the game beyond the visitors’ reach.

Further goals from strike duo Josh Venner and Isaac Sands wrapped it up before Nick Gowan fired in Rosette’s second with the final kick of the game.

Holden was the man of the match for Cayton, while central midfielder Martin Hadrick and Thornton were the top players for Rosette.
