Saturday League: Filey make District Cup final while Newlands keep title charge alive

An even first 45 minutes saw the sides go in level at the break, Filey had opened the scoring early on through Tommy Wilson, but a Lloyd Henderson thunderbolt dragged Steve Clegg’s Edgehill side level.

Filey improved after the interval and led 2-1 after 51 minutes, James Pinder keeping his composure to round Edgehill keeper Martin Cappleman and tap in.

The result was put beyond any doubt when substitute Nathan Vernon smashed in a stunning effort from 35-yards to make it 3-1 and kill the game off.

Town will meet the winners of the other semi-final between West Pier and Newlands.

Boss Jay Taylor said: “It was quite even first-half, but we were awful.

“We were a lot better in the second half and deserved to win the game.”

Taylor singled out lone striker Pinder as their star man.

Cayton battled back from 2-0 down to beat Duchess 4-2 after extra-time to move into the final of the League Trophy.

Duchess led 2-0 at the break, Craig Sherwin’s header opening the scoring before a mistake in the Cayton defence allowed Ian Laing to pounce and double their lead.

Cayton rallied after the break and soon made it 2-1, veteran striker Steve Roberts slamming in from distance.

With just two minutes left on the clock Cayton levelled. Josh Venner’s cross diverted past his own keeper by a Duchess defender to send the game into extra-time.

The first half of extra-time saw neither side find the target, but Venner’s solo effort after the break handed Cayton the initiative.

The result was put beyond doubt when Jack Pinder rounded the keeper and duly made it 4-2 to Shaun Rennison’s men, who will meet the winners of next week’s last four clash between Edgehill Reserves and Athletico2B.

Luke Newbold was Cayton’s star man.

Falsgrave Athletic and Seamer Reserves will meet in the final of the Frank White Trophy after they beat Westover Reserves and Ayton Reserves respectively.

Lee Smythe’s Falsgrave Athletic side thumped Ayton Reserves 7-1 in their one-sided semi-final clash.

Conrad Sygitowicz bagged two from the penalty spot, while Mikey Anderson also fired in a brace as Falsgrave cruised into the final.

Paul Reddy, Simon Young and Theo James also found the back of the net.

James Hunter bagged Ayton Reserves’ only goal of the game after a fumble by the Athletic keeper.

Title-chasing Seamer Reserves edged past Westover Reserves 2-1.

Gary Dixon’s men led 1-0 after Gary Walters fired in after Danny Birley’s through-ball on 42 minutes.

Seamer should have been home and dry after half-time, but a rare penalty miss from the usually dependable Kris Tate kept the scoreline locked at 1-0.

Fifteen minutes later Seamer doubled their lead in fortuitous fashion after Conner Myerscough and Gary Walters charged down a clearance and the the ball deflected off a Westover defender and into the back of the net.

An 80th-minute strike from Neal Castleton set up a tense last 10 minutes, but Seamer held firm to move into the final.

Dixon singled out Tate as their star man, despite his miss from the spot.

Newlands landed a huge blow in the division one title race as they hammered rivals West Pier 7-1.

After a tight opening 15 minutes, Park took control and overwhelmed their hosts, Danny Jenkinson firing in a hat-trick and Stefan Moon grabbing a brace.

Sean Exley and Dan Freer rounded off the scoring for Shaun Mancrief’s men, while Pier’s solitary strike from Gary Thomas was a mere consolation.

Both managers agreed that Park dominated proceedings, Pier boss Andy Spivey said: “Fair play to Newlands, they totally dominated us. After the first 15 minutes it was one-way traffic and they could have scored more in the end.”

Spivey singled out left-back Andy Sheader as Pier’s only star performer of the game.

Newlands manager Shaun Mancrief was delighted with his side’s performance.

He said: “We battered them. It was a good all-round team performance.

“If we win our remaining games then we will win the league. To say we were eight points behind at Christmas, it would be more satisfying to win it this year than when we dominated last season.”

Seamer beat a depleted Ayton 3-0, but made hard work of their three points.

After a goalless first half, Matty Forsyth’s strike gave Paddy Parke’s men the lead.

Travis Wood doubled their advantage on the hour mark before Danny Bradbury wrapped things up.

Whitby Fisherman’s Society followed up their superb cup semi-final win last weekend with a 4-1 win on the road at Hunmanby.

Steve Ross scored the only goal of the first half as Fisherman’s went in 1-0 up at the break.

Mark Swales doubled their lead when he smashed into the top corner, before Steve Swales’ corner flew directly into the back of the net for 3-0.

Man of the match Paul Tose made it 4-0 before United grabbed a late consolation strike.

Filey Town Reserves closed the gap on division two league leaders Whitby RFC, but they were made to work hard for their 3-2 win against a depleted Scalby side.

It looked like Town would dominate proceedings against their patched-up hosts as Dave Wedge headed in from a corner to give his side the lead before Max Gage and Martyn Jenkinson quickly made it 3-0 to the away side.

The home side rallied and went in at the break 3-1 down, Ben Webster latching on to James Blenkinsop’s ball over the top before finishing superbly.

Scalby again pressed after the break and after missing a handful of chances Webster precisely found the bottom corner to give The Otters hope of a dramatic comeback.

Despite pressing the issue, Scalby couldn’t find the leveller and Town took the crucial three points that ensure the title race will almost certainly go down to the wire.

Joe Gallagher stood out for Town, while goalscorer Webster and defensive duo Nic Wheatman and Karl Hansell shone for the home side.

Newlands Park Reserves consolidated their place in the top four with a 7-2 thrashing of FC Rosette.

A Drew McCoubrey double and a Stew Bates strike handed Park a 3-0 advantage at the break, before McCoubrey wrapped up his hat-trick after the interval to make it 4-0.

Rosette hit back, but Park responded minutes later through Sam Chambers.

Again the away side found the net, but any hopes they had were quickly extinguished as Chambers netted his second to make it 6-2.

Striker Chris Dove completed the scoring to make it 7-2.

Joint-boss Dougie McGregor singled out midfield duo Brad Rowley and James Tadman.

In the only game in division three, Tennyson hammered Scalby Reserves 8-3.

Man of the match Billy Joe Johnson fired in two goals for his side, one a free-kick, while Adam Martin also notched a brace.

Their other goals came from Clayton Walker, Nathan Patterson, Sam Mahoney and Rob Whitehead.

Scalby’s man of the match James Long grabbed two goals for his side, while Tom Manson notched the other with a 30-yard free-kick.
