Saturday League: Leaders Edgehill beat Filey

Scarborough Saturday League division one leaders Edgehill came back from a goal down to claim a crucial 2-1 win at rivals Filey Town.

In this division one clash,James Pinder opened the scoring for Town after 15 minutes with a cracking half-volley from 25 yards, but the visitors levelled two minutes before half-time, a scooped ball over the top from Liam Cooper was finished off with a volley from the edge of the box by the in-form Ricky Greening.

Town came out of the blocks swiftly at the start of the second half, but despite having several headed chances to regain their lead they failed to find the target.

Edgehill made them pay for this on the hour mark when Greening nicked the ball off Ben Briggs and put Carl Hepples through, who finished neatly.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men when Paul Watson was sent off for a professional foul when pulling the last man down.

Both sides had two clear chances to add to the scoreline but the score remained 2-1 to Edgehill.

Jordan Shaw and Ben Salt, making their debuts from the bench, as well as Danny Collins and Dean Craig all had great games but they were pipped to the man of the match award by centre-back Tom Hickin, who was commanding at the back.

Westover Wasps moved into the top half of the table with a 4-1 win at Hunmanby United.

Ryan Matson headed the Wasps into a deserved lead in the 20th minute after connecting with a fine cross from Daryl Varley.

Matson then turned provider, his shot beaten away by the United keeper and Chris Cass tapped into the net.

The hosts got back into the game with an own goal, but before half-time, Chris Hannam controlled the ball well from a James Seymour cross and poked the ball past the keeper.

Varley put in some more fine work for the visitors’ fourth work, this time finding Seymour at the back post with his corner, and the latter slotting in from an acute angle.

Cass and Sean Bloom shared the man of the match award for fine work in central midfield.

Ayton twice came from a goal down to earn a 3-2 home win against Sleights, giving the home side their first win of the season.

Ben Watson put Sleights ahead in the 15th minute and although man of the match Mikey Pickering levelled for Ayton early in the second half, Watson scored again 20 minutes from time to restore Sleights’ lead.

Ten minutes later Dan Peel equalised from a fine team move, and the same player struck the winner six minutes from time with a tidy finish.

Luke Asbury was man of the match for Sleights.

West Pier eased into the next round of the League Cup with a 5-1 win at home to fellow division one side Seamer Sports.

Steve Sheader fired in the opener for Pier after five minutes after Neil Thomas had flicked the ball to him from a corner.

This was the score at half-time as Seamer had to battle hard to keep the hosts at bay.

Two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half saw Andy Spivey’s team take charge.

Pier went 2-0 up when Luke Delve slotted home after a strong run from winger Ali Caw set him up, and Caw was also instrumental in the third goal, as another mazy run saw the former Seamer player fouled and Gaz Thomas fired in the resulting free-kick.

A cracking 22-yard strike from youngster Connor Myerscough brought the visitors back into the game, and they started to push for a second goal, but two goals in the final two minutes killed off the villagers.

Paul Provins’ cross was deflected in by a Seamer defender to make it 4-1 and Provins’ tidy finish wrapped up the scoring.

Caw was man of the match for the victors for a strong display on the right wing despite still recovering from illness, while Myerscough, who had stepped up from the reserves, was outstanding for Paddy Parke’s team.

First division Whitby Fisherman’s Society eased to an 8-0 victory at division three side Scalby Reserves.

Steven Swales smashed in a hat-trick for the visitors, with Neil hart scoring twice and Steven Ross, Ryan Braithwaite and Callum Ogden also netting.

Sixteen-year-old centre-back Luke Stokoe was the man of the match for Whitby, while fellow youngster George Wilson was the star man for the home side.

Ten-man Newlands eased to a 7-0 home win against third division Ayton Reserves.

Manager Shaun Mancrief was forced to pull his boots on for the depleted hosts, with Adam Stride and Kile Fields both banging in hat-tricks, Aidan Thomas-Foster scoring the other goals.

Thomas-Foster and Mikey Wilson shared the man of the match award for the home side.

Ryedale Sports earned a fine 7-2 home win against fellow top-flight side USB.

The home side started brightly and took the lead when left-back Ben Thompson found himself one on one with the USB keeper and scored with a nice chip.

It was soon 2-0 when a great overlapping run from Tom Tate allowed Adam Hornby to slot home from the move of the game.

Charles Battye and Georgie Rose then struck a goal apiece as a depleted USB side roared back into contention.

Ryedale then seemed to spark back into life and created lots of chances and the pressure eventually paid off with Hornby scoring a quickfire double to complete his hat-trick, both of them neat finishes after one-on-ones.

As USB tired Ryedale again pressed, but it took a touch of magic from Matty Gardner, who went past six USB players beforer slotting powerfully past the visiting keeper.

Jamie Fewster was the next on the scoresheet after good wing work from Jack Hall and a nice cross, the seventh goal coming through Jordan Thackeray’s finish from a low fizzed cross.

Hornby and Martin Foxton shared the man of the match award, with new keeper Johnny Woodhead impressing for USB, who had eight players missing.

Second division FC Rosette were forced to work hard for a 4-3 win at division three outfit Sleights Reserves in the League Trophy.

Lee Wardle gave the Newby side the ideal start with a neat finish after only 25 seconds, but the home side came back strongly to lead 2-1 at the interval through a close range strike from Shane Belchamber and a 20-yard scorcher by Steve McGill.

Alex Wray levelled for the visitors from the penalty spot and new signing Sean Conroy smashed the ball in from long range to put the visitors 3-2 ahead.

Wray doubled his side’s lead with a thumping 25-yard finish into the top corner of the net but the home side pulled a third goal back five minutes from time through their star man Michael Brennan and Rosette ended up hanging on for their spot in the second round.

Wray was named as man of the match, but keeper Mikey Harland also made some important saves to keep his side in the game while Wardle also shone up front on his own.

In the Scarborough FA Junior Cup, Newlands Park Reserves came back from trailing 3-0 at Snainton after only 20 minutes to win 5-4 on penalties.

Then hosts surged into an early three-goal lead as Newlands started with only 10 men, Martin Kelly chipping in the opener, Ryan Collins hitting the second and Mike Webster lofting his shot over the Newlands keeper.

Stew Bates pulled it back to 3-1 and Sam Chambers arrived to make it 11 men and immediately set up Bates for his second to make it 3-2 at half-time.

Newlands then had Gary Lumbis sent off for a second bookable offence but this did not deter Newlands who made it 3-3 with a great move involving veteran Dougie McGregor that set up Bates to complete his hat-trick.

In the penalty shoot-out Newlands scored all five and Snainton’s Webster hit the post with their fourth to send Newlands through to the second round.

Bates was named as man of the match in a wonderful all-round performance, while left-back Collins was star man for Snainton.

Defending division two champions Edgehill Reserves eased to a 7-3 win against third division Commercial.

The visitors took a shock 10th-minute lead, but a scorching 25-yard free-kick by centre-back Dave Bell levelled the scores, then fine work from Kieran Grzesiowski set up Martyn Ferrey to put Edgehill ahead.

Jason Prosser scored a goal either side of the half-time break to put Edgehill in control, then Ellis Sesllers’ first goal for Edgehill made it 5-1, though Commercial did swiftly reply with a second goal.

A fine solo goal from Josh Sands made it 6-2, the 16-year-old Grzesiowski struck to cap the win, the visitors getting a late third goal.

Bell was named as man of the match for Edgehill.

Eastway Sports also moved into the next round with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win at Brotton RA, their hero being centre-back Rob Clark, who went in goal just before the penalty shoot-out, saving two penalties and scoring the winner.

The visitors went in front 10 minutes before half-time when sub Eric Hall, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, half-volleyed a fine effort past the Brotton keeper.

Former Eastfield and Boro Reserves marksman Hall headed his dies 2-0 in front before half-time and when Nathan Till’s free-kick was forced into his own net by a home defender the visitors seemed to be cruising through.

The home side rallied late on though, scoring their first in the 80th minute then netting two more in the following five minutes, forcing Eastway to hang on, manager Barton Newham deciding to take keeper Brad Easton off and move Clark into goal in time for the shoot-out.

Former Scarborough Town keeper Clark saved two spot-kicks and then scored the winner to secure a 4-3 win, he was also named as man of the match for a strong display at centre-back, allied to his keeping heroics. Hall also deserves special mention for a superb debut.

Filey Town Reserves continued their 100 per cent start to the second division season with a 5-2 home win against West Pier Reserves.

Goals from Josh McKaig, Martyn Jenkinson and Max Gage put the hosts in charge before Mikey Barker pulled a goal back from the penalty spot.

Joe Gage restored the three-goal lead for Lee Cappleman’s team and sub Ben Eblet added a fifth with his first touch, the sub scoring the goal of the game with a clever chipped finish over the Pier keeper.

Rob Speight added a second for the visitors but it was too little too late. Joe Gage was named as man of the match for a great display up front.

Scalby maintained their fine start to the season with a 4-1 win at Cayton Corinthians.

Daz Arnott had the ideal chance to put Scalby ahead early on when the visitors were awarded a penalty, but his kick was saved by Sam Williams.

Jon Bateman then put Scalby ahead with a neat finish after a fine team move, and five minutes into the second half Rich Simpson fired in from the penalty spot after Shaun Rennison had handled in the area.

With Cayton pushing for a goal to get back into the game, Scalby struck twice on the counter-attack, Arnott netting both efforts to make up for his earlier miss.

Luke Newbould’s late spot-kick was little more than a consolation for the below-par hosts. Keeper Danny Mitchell was named star man for Scalby.

Whitby RUFC turned on the style in the second half to defeat visitors Duchess 5-1.

The visitors took the lead in the 20th minute, a nice breakaway goal by the visitors with good work from Paul Romans who fed Adam North and he squared for Rob Farnell to finish, all three debutants linking up well.

The home side levelled 10 minutes later when Paul Jobling fired in from a Dave Welham pass, the 1-1 scoreline a fair reflection of an evenly-fought first half.

The hosts turned on the style after the break and went ahead on the hour mark when Ben Sullivan’s superb skill and pass allowed Marc Usher to net.

Super-sub Phil Spencer started the move for the third goal, which was finished off well by Jobling, and then Spencer added the fourth after good work from Sullivan, Kilpatraick and Jobling.

Usher made it 5-1 with a neat finish after more great play from Ben Richardson, Kilpatrick and Sullivan to cap a fine team display.

In the only division three match, Cayton Corinthians Reserves battled back from a goal down twice to claim a 6-4 home win against Falsgrave Athletic, with both sides having a player sent off.

Mikey Anderson fired in a free-kick to put Athletic ahead, but the home side levelled through Mike Szalabski, who went on to net a hat-trick.

Anderson restored Falsgrave’s lead just before half-time, and the turning point came early in the second half when Zak Hansen had a goal disallowed despite the visitors’ protests that the youngster was several yards offside.

Hansen was sent off shortly after this for using foul and abusive language.

The home side then went 4-2 ahead, but Anderson completed his hat-trick to keep Lee Smythe’s team in the game.

The villagers once again went clear at 5-3 but Paul Reddy pulled it back to 5-4 to set up a thrilling finale.

John Hodgson completed his own hat-trick to seal the win.

Strikers Hodgson and Szalabski shared the man of the match award for Cayton, with new signing, young centre-back Adam Robertshaw, also impressing alongside stalwart Daz Jones.

Anderson was man of the match for the visitors.
