Saturday League: Newlands and Edgehill Reserves march on

Seamer Sports Reserves opened the scoring through Rob Pinder in the 22nd minute of the Trophy Traders League Trophy tie, but fine work from Lee Dennis was followed by Joe Logan’s run as the forward turned neatly and powered his shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Edgehill Reserves then went ahead in dramatic circumstances, Stephen Whitaker was forced to go off through injury and Dave Bell arrived just in time to replace him and with his first touch he smashed the ball past Seamer keeper Joe Wright.

Pinder’s second goal of the game levelled the scores for Seamer just 30 seconds after the half-time break, then Seamer man of the match Matty Dawson reacted quickest to blast his shot home after Matty Drury’s header had been tipped onto the bar by Daz Palmer.

Fifteen minutes from time Dennis was once again the architect, this time his cross finished off by a bullet header from the impressive Logan.

Six minutes later the hosts were awarded a free-kick 30 yards from goal, and Bell took charge and belted the ball home into the top corner, giving Wright no chance.

Edgehill boss Dan I’Anson singled out Logan as his side’s best player but was quick to hail his team’s overall performance, while Dawson showed his class in central midfield for the villagers.

Newlands brushed aside a below-par West Pier to win their League Cup semi.

Goals from Sean Exley, Danny Jenkinson, Adam Stride and super-sub Aidan Thomas put Newlands into the semis.

A minute’s silence was observed before the game for Jane Mancrief, who was the sister of Newlands manager Shaun Mancrief, and sadly passed away earlier this week.

Michael Wilson was Park man of the match for his defensive midfield display, while defenders Ricky Nock, Nick Beal and Kile Fields also shone.

James Pinder and Daz Clough scored a brace apiece as Filey Town eased to a 9-0 home win against Ryedale to take top spot in division one.

Liam Sugden, Cam Dobson, Tommy Wilson, man of the match Ricky Tomlinson, and John Emerson, with a penalty, completed the rout.

Keeper Matthew Todd put in a strong show for Ryedale despite the scoreline.

Neil Hart hammered in six goals as Whitby Fisherman’s Society cruised to a 14-0 win at Ayton, whose relegation to division two was confirmed by this defeat.

Ste Ross also hit a hat-trick, while keeper Paul Cull scored from the spot, with Ryan Braithwaite, Paul Tose, Sam Bailey and Ian Smith also netting.

Goals from Curt Rose and man of the match Chris Cass earned Westover Wasps a 2-2 draw at Seamer Sports.

The hosts deserved to be 2-0 ahead at the break thanks to a Gary Lawton effort and a thumping 25-yard shot from Joe Gallagher but Rose pulled a goal back with a lob after fine work from Cass in the first minute of the second half.

Cass then secured a share of the spoils with a header after James Young’s cross.

Two late goals from Benn Sullivan and Sam Richardson earned promoted Whitby RFC a 2-0 home win against Scalby in division two.

Sam Gale was the hero for Whitby as he pulled off a string of fine saves in each half, and the hosts nicked the points with an 89th-minute strike from Sullivan and Richardson’s effort a minute later after fine work from Jordan Purvis and Phil Spencer.

Cayton Corinthians maintained their push for promotion with a 3-1 home win against rivals Duchess.

Jake McAleese, who was Cayton’s man of the match for a strong display as sweeper, opened the scoring for the hosts from a free-kick.

Five minutes into the second half Duchess, who only had a bare 11 and were without both their regular strikers, levelled when Nick Bell fired in the rebound after his penalty had been saved.

Cayton restored their lead within five minutes, Isaac Sands heading home and the win was sealed five minutes from time when Josh Venner’s solo run and shot saw off Duchess.

Duchess chief Paul McBean singled out Tim Jackson as their star but hailed the efforts of the other 10 players.

Cayton Corinthians Reserves recovered from a shaky start to win 9-2 at Scalby Reserves in division three.

Man of the match Mike Szalabski scored a hat-trick for the visitors, while Jon Hodgson notched a brace, with Jon Read, sub Scott Davison, Jake Sands and Ash Durham also on target.

Veteran Ian Wareing and Finnish ace Janne Oinas had put the hosts 2-1 in front during the second half, with right-back Tom Manson the man of the match for Jeff Brader’s team.
