Saturday League: Pier beat rivals Edgehill in thriller

Edgehill made the better start to the crunch clash and Ricky Greening’s 25-yard shot crashed back off the bar to give the hosts a reprieve.

Pier got a foothold in the game when they went on front after 20 minutes, Ali Caw finishing in style past Edgehill keeper Callum Myers after a fine through-ball from Tommy Barker.

Five minutes later Martin Cooper’s corner was headed in powerfully by Neil Thomas to double Pier’s advantage.

Edgehill hit back 10 minute before half-time with Danny Collins poking home after good work from Paul Watson.

The away team stepped up a gear after the break with the introduction of Robbie Hawkes, Gary Hepples and Lewis Taylor, and this paid off when the latter fired in the leveller from 18 yards.

Edgehill were now on top, but eight minutes from time grabbed the winner. Excellent work from Martin Cooper and Caw set up Gaz Thomas to fire past Myers.

There was still time for Shaw to hit the post for Edgehill and Luke Delve to hit the bar for the hosts.

Pier boss Andy Spivey said: “This was a tight game which could have gone either way. It was a great team performance from Pier with Danny Cooper outstanding at centre-back.”

Filey Town moved up into second place after a hard-earned 4-2 win at Whitby Fisherman’s Society.

James Pinder put Town ahead in the 14th minute, but a defensive error allowed Dan Winspear to level 14 minutes later, despite Filey having had the lion’s share of possession.

Filey made a great start to the second half, Cam Dobson heading in after a fine run and cross from defender Gary Wardell.

Another slip in the Town defence then allowed Neil Hart to lob the Filey keeper from 35 yards to make it 2-2. The visitors soon regained their lead though, Wardell scoring from the penalty spot after Ricky Tomlinson had been fouled.

Fine work from Dobson then set up Pinder to slot in his second, and Town’s fourth, to seal victory.

Central midfielder John Emmerson was the Filey man of the match, with Wardell also excelling, while Ian Smith netted the Fisherman’s star man award.

Defending champions Newlands Park looked to be back on top form in their 9-1 win at Sleights.

Man of the match Danny Jenkinson led the way with four goals, while Billy Logan returned to the Park line-up with a hat-trick, while Matty Griffiths and Drew McCoubrey also notched.

The pick of the Park goals saw defender Kile Fields play the ball through to Jenkinson, who then ran down the right flank before sending in a great cross for Logan to head home.

Jim Neal netted for the home side, whose man of the match was Luke Asbury, but Ed Turner and Sam Leadley also shone for the villagers.

Westover Wasps earned a 4-2 home win against a weakened USB, mainly thanks to a fine first-half display that saw the hosts charge into a 3-0 lead.

Liam Buglass set up Chris Hannam to open the scoring, and a fine team move started and finished by Josh Young - with fine play from Luke Jones in between - doubled the Wasps lead.

Buglass was involved again in the build-up to the third goal, creating the chance for Jones to take on a defender and slot past the USB keeper Johnny Woodhead.

Only some brave blocks from right-back Charles Battye and top saves from Woodhead kept the depleted visitors in the game in the opening 45 minutes.

The visitors dug deep after the interval and pulled a goal back through Tommy Day and then a cracking half-volley from Tom Williamson made it 3-2.

USB pushed on looking for a leveller but the Wasps clinched the win when Ryan Matson headed in on the line after a Hannam shot had hit the bar and bounced down.

Centre-back Callum Gravestock and midfielder Hannam shared the Westover man of the match award, while Battye and Woodhead shared the plaudits for USB.

Seamer Sports’ improvement continued with a 6-1 home win against Ryedale Sports Club, who have yet to earn a point this season.

Travis Wood’s deflected 25-yard shot put Paddy Parke’s team in front and a scorching 25-yard left-foot shot from right-back Matty Forsyth made it 2-0 at half-time to Sports.

A Gaz Lawton double made sure of the win for the hosts, Jamie Hartley’s header making it 5-1 before Ryedale pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, skipper Joe Gallagher heading in Seamer’s sixth.

Parke hailed the efforts of Gallagher, Ady Blake, Hartley and Matty Drury in a great team display.

Hunmanby climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win at Ayton, who dropped down into the bottom two after this loss.

The villagers had most of the play in this game but failed to take their chances, Tyson Stubbings gloing close on a couple of occasions.

A Phil Ansell first-half effort and a tap-in from a yard out by stalwart Andy Ball after the interval grabbed a precious win for the away team.

Sam Whitehead was named as the man of the match for the hosts for a strong display on the left wing.

Whitby RUFC climbed to the top of the second division table with a 12-1 home win against a weakened West Pier Reserves team, who played most of the second half with only 10 men.

Mikey Kilpatrick and Paul Jobling scored four goals apiece for Whitby, with Marc Usher scoring twice and Sam Richardson and Damon Craig also registering.

Pier, who only had 11 players, were trailing 2-1 at the break with Chris Weetman netting for the visitors, but an injury early in the second period saw them reduced to 10 men and the home side took full advantage.

Kilpatrick, who was the man of the match for the victors, completed a perfect hat-trick, a header, and a goal with his left foot and his right, before adding a fourth.

Josh Venner smashed in five goals as Cayton Corinthians surged into third spot thanks to a 7-0 win at Snainton.

Eighteen-year-old Venner netted twice before the break, and after Alex May had headed Cayton 3-0 in front just after the break, the teenager smashed in four more before Michael Dennis completed the scoring.

Midfielder Joel Boyer, who was celebrating his 18th birthday, and Venner shared the man of the match award for Cayton, while for Snainton, left-back Nathan Barber shone and Josh Beach worked hard.

Promotion hopefuls Scalby had to work hard for a 3-3 home draw against struggling Athletico2B.

The visitors had the better of the first half and took the lead when a fine run from Sam Swift down the left wing ended with him finishing neatly across the Scalby keeper.

After the break, Scalby came back into the game and levelled when John Bateman bundled a Daz Arnott corner over the line. New signing Dan Peel then squeezed his shot over the line after Shaun Scales robbed the visitors of possession and crossed after a few blocks.

Shaun Dodson levelled from the spot for the Cats after a foul by Jake Scutt and Dodson’s rasping left foot finish in a one on one put Athletico2B back in front.

Five minutes from time Gaz Olney’s 35-yard top-poke flew into the top corner of the net to secure a share of the spoils for the hosts.

Scalby boss Dan Gregory said: It was a good game. We started slowly again but battled back. Shaun Scales was man of the match but new signings Simon Rigg, Dan Peel and Ash Townley all impressed on debut.”

Athletico’s front three of Dodson, Swift and Ben David were their top players.

Duchess eased their relegation fears with a 6-2 home win against basement club FC Rosette.

Tim Jackson opened the scoring for Paul McBean’s side, abut Sean Conroy levelled, only for Adam North to restore the home side’s lead.

Gaz Maw’s fine header after a flowing move made it 3-1 and Jackson made it four before the break.

Luke Midgley’s cross-cum-shot and a Tom Hicks effort put the hosts well clear before Alex Wray’s deflected free-kick completed the scoring.

Chris Watson, playing in an unaccustomed role as right-sided midfielder, was Duchess man of the match.

Falsgrave Athletic won 5-3 at Westover Wasps Reserves to take second placed in division three.

Sean Hope’s half-volley put Wasps in front in the 20th minute, but 10 minutes later Lewis Short equalised.

Left-winger Short fired in his second after the interval for Falsgrave, and sub Nick Stancill added a third on the hour mark, Mark Reddy scoring the goal of the game with a stunning volley from a very acute angle to make it 4-1.

Mark Wade gave Wasps hope with their second , but Zak Hansen’s fine finish sealed the win for the visitors, the Westover side scoring a last-minute third goal from the penalty spot through Leroy Donaldson.

Short was man of the match for Falsgrave, with central midfield duo Gavin McGough and Paul Reddy also doing well, while Neal Castleton, also in the middle of midfield, was the pick of the home players.

Ayton Reserves earned a fine 4-2 win at Commercial, with Tommy Smith rolling back the years in a virtuoso performance for the visitors.

Smith scored the opener for Ayton, then set up the next two for Danny Bywater as Ayton surged into a 3-0 half-time lead.

The hosts fought their way back into the game with two Macauley Youngson free-kicks, but Mike Grayshan sealed the win for Ayton with a 70th-minute effort.

Caretaker boss Jon Hick said: “The lads were superb today, all 12 who played deserve to share the man of the match award.”

Full-backs Ben Watson and Glen Wilkinson were the joint star men for Commercial’s young side, with 16-year-old Tom Sutherland also excelling in central midfield.

Eastway Sports had to fight back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to fellow promotion-chasers Scalby Reserves.

Jack South netted his first-ever goal for Scalby to hand Jeff Brader’s side the lead and fellow teenager Freddie Schmuck added a second, also his first goal for the club to give the away team a flying start.

Craig Moss pulled a goal back for Eastway before the interval, shortly after Eric Hall was switched from centre-forward to central midfield, and this seemed to turn the game in the hosts’ favour as they piled on the pressure after the interval, finally levelling through Jim-Bob Binnie.

A combination of poor finishing from Eastway and strong defending from Scalby’s joint men of the match, veterans Jez Clifford and Craig Furnell, ensured the shares were spoiled.

Hall was named as the Eastway man of the match.
