Saturday League: Seamer’s late revival sees off Ayton

Third division leaders Seamer Sports Reserves scored all four goals in five minutes late on as the hosts staged a great escape to see off Ayton Reserves 4-2, while Newlands Park suffered their first defeat since the 2012-13 season, falling to a shock 2-1 loss at home to division one strugglers Whitby Fisherman’s Society.

A strong Ayton side went 2-0 up thanks to goals on 28 and 70 minutes from Tyson Stubbings and looked set to end Seamer’s 100 per cent start to the division three season, but fine work from Matty Dawson and Sam Walker led to centre-back Matty Drury heading in for the hosts in the 77th minute.

Three minutes later Danny Glendinning’s thunderbolt of a shot flew into the roof of the net to make it 2-2 and a minute later good play from Glendinning led to super-sub Gaz Walters firing in a superb overhead kick to put the leaders ahead for the first time in the game,

Glendinning netted his second to seal the win in the 82nd minute, capping a superb five-minute spell that saw Gary Dixon’s team turn the game on its head.

Drury was singled out as the man of the match for Seamer, a strong commanding presence in the heart of the home defence and sparked their revival with his headed goal.

Westover Wasps Reserves came back from a goal down to win 3-1 at home to rivals Scalby Reserves and move up into third place in the table.

Lee Darrell pounced to put Scalby in front after 10 minutes, but unfortunately he injured himself in the process and was replaced.

The Wasps levelled in the 25th minute, player-manager Paul Brunger’s free-kick was launched into the area and Russ Taylor was quickest to react, curling his shot low into the corner of the net from eight yards, beyond Scalby keeper Kev Sunderland.

Brunger then headed his side in front just five minutes later and on the hour mark, winger Mark Bean took on three Scalby players and forced the ball home from nine yards.

Central midfielder Jordan Kilner and Bean were the star men for Wasps, while young defender George Wilson and youthful midfielder Matty Turner shone for the visitors, who also had Sunderland on top form in goal.

Tennyson hot-shot Sam Mahoney struck a hat-trick to help his team to a 5-2 home win against Commercial.

Neil Forsyth and Jordan Patterson also netted for the home side, while Jackson Jowett, who was also their man of the match, scored two cracking goals for the visitors.

Ryan Wood was man of the match for Tennyson.

Sleights Reserves and Eastway Sports shared the spoils after a 1-1 draw.

The visitors’ chances were dented by the second sending-off in as many weeks for Jim-Bob Binnie in the first half.

Two minutes before half-time Sleights took the lead through Jim Niel, but Rob Clark headed in a leveller on the hour mark from an Eric Hall cross.

Sports were the better team during the second half, and could have easily claimed all three points despite a man down.

Hall was man of the match, impressing as centre-forward and then dropping back to central midfield when Eastway went down to 10 men.

Keeper Dave Fish was the man of the match for Sleights.

Newlands Park’s hopes of defending their division one crown were dented by a shock 2-1 loss at home to struggling Whitby Fisherman’s Society, the hosts’ first defeat in 30 league games.

Park boss Shaun Mancrief said: “This is our first loss for more than a season, we had a few players missing but Whitby deserved their win today as they kept going.

“Dan Freer, who scored our goal, and Matty Griffiths were our best players.”

An understrength Edgehill kept their title hopes on track with a 3-0 win at home to Sleights, but only a couple of fine early saves from Liam Salt kept the hosts in the game after a sluggish start.

Salt made fine stops from two one-on-one breaks in the first 20 minutes and this proved crucial as the hosts took the lead against the run of play in the 25th minute when Ricky Greening fired in a penalty after a foul on Phil Warnett.

Andy Noon, Edgehill’s only sub, came on for an injured Liam Cooper at half-time and he set up the second goal for Danny Collins to tap home in the 65th minute.

Seven minutes from time Edgehill made sure of the win when Kurtis Henderson finished expertly.

Salt was named as the man of the match by Edgehill boss Steven Clegg, while Sam Leadley and Sam Wiggins impressed for a determined Sleights team.

Westover Wasps surged into second spot with an 8-1 home win against lowly Hunmanby United.

Luke Jones set up Curtis Rose to open the scoring and then Callum Gravestock headed in Aiden McCallion’s corner to make it 2-0.

Rose then set up Jones to add a third and the striker smashed in the Wasps’ fourth goal, midfielder Chris Hannam scoring his sixth goal in seven games to make it 5-0 at the break.

After the break left-back James Seymour rifled home after fine play from Liam Buglass, Max Wood pulled a goal back for United but Jones completed his hat-trick from the spot after a foul on player-manager Jamie Heritage.

Jones capped a fine display with the final goal after an assist from man of the match McCallion.

A four-goal blast from former Edgehill ace Shaun Dodson steered Athletico2B to a thrilling 6-5 home second division win against Edgehill Reserves.

Veteran Stephen Chapman and Chris Bowman also netted for the home side, with sub Dave Bell and Mikey Barker both notching braces for Edgehill, and Martyn Ferrey scoring a penalty.

Dodson was the Cats’ man of the match, while centre-backs Martin Cappleman and Dave Ledden also excelled.

Edgehill’s star players were defenders Paul I’Anson and Lee Dennis and midfielder Maciej Kapynski.

Duchess continued their resurgence with a 10-1 win at West Pier Reserves, who played most of the game with only nine men.

The hosts started the game with only 10 men and then went down to nine after only 15 minutes due to an injury.

Grizzled veteran Gaz Maw continued to roll back the years with a brace of goals, while Tom Hicks, Ian Laing and James Huthwaite also scored doubles.

Tim Jackson and James Hughes scored a goal apiece for Paul McBean’s team.

The visitors put in a great team effort, with midfielders Chris Watson and Luke Midgley, as well as defender Rich Garton, all taking the eye.

Pietr Zbochi scored Pier’s goal in the first half, the home side battling superbly throughout the game despite being reduced to nine.
