Sunday League: Newlands Reserves pull off great escape

Newlands Park Reserves battled back from 6-1 down to secure an 8-6 home success against Scarborough Spa in the Scarborough News Sunday League second division, while leaders Trafalgar Reserves suffered a shock 5-3 defeat at home to Roscoes Bar.

The visitors made a flying start to the game, roaring into a 4-0 lead after only 20 minutes.

Ryan Sanderson pulled a goal back after good work from central defender Sean Pinder, but two quickfire strikes from Spa meant they were 6-1 ahead after only 30 minutes and seemingly cruising to victory.

Jamie Deyes lobbed the Spa keeper to reduce the deficit and before half-time a spectacular 35-yard free-kick from Pinder made it 6-3.

The hosts stepped up a gear after the interval and Deyes slammed in a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give Newlands further hope, with a Sanderson tap-in at the back post bringing them to within a goal of Spa.

The returning Jona Webster, playing his first game in three years, headed his side onto level terms and Deyes and Sanderson completed their hat-tricks to complete the great escape and hand Park an 8-6 win.

Rob Whitehead netted a hat-trick in the first half for Spa with Aiden Cooper, Simon McFall and a Ryan Holt penalty helping them into their 6-1 lead.

Central midfielder Dan Sheader was named as Park’s man of the match for a tireless display, while Deyes, Duncan McDermott and Pinder also impressed, while Whitehead as man of the match for Spa, with Kev Hodgson also playing well for the away team.

Ten-man Roscoes Bar ended leaders Trafalgar Reserves’ flawless start to the season with a 5-3 win at Staxton.

Dan Parker’s header put Roscoes ahead but youngster Taylor Jordan levelled for the hosts.

Parker’s lob over the home keeper restored the visitors’ lead, and a low finish from Gary Hepples made it 3-1 to Lee Paterson’s team.

Tom Allen was then sent off for Roscoes after handling a goalbound Traf shot on the line, Liam Salt firing in the resultant penalty.

Paterson was then forced to bring on Arron Scott for Oli Morfitt as the latter had lost a contact lens, and Scott made an instant impact by crossing for Hepples to swivel and finish into the corner of the net.

Roscoes keeper George Allen then suffered a suspected broken finger after making a diving save, forcing them to bring Dave Pickard on into goal.

Traf refused to give in and after a sustained spell of pressure they replied with another penalty when Andrew Rowley brought down a home player in the box, Salt scoring again from the spot to make it 4-3.

Dave Pickard then came out to clear a long pass from Traf, and his clearance found Mark Kenyon, who flicked it on for Hepples to complete his hat-trick and wrap up the win for the away side.

Paterson, who was forced to play at centre-back due to a lack of defenders -his first appearance for 10 months after suffering a knee injury - said: “We all played really well and had to come under a lot of pressure in the second half but coped well. All credit to the lads as they all gave it 100 per cent.”

West Riding failed to take advantage of Trafalgar Reserves’ slip as they scraped a 4-4 home draw with Cayton Corinthians.

A lacklustre Riding were trailing 3-1 at the interval, with only a Jack Ramos goal to show for their efforts.

A Curt Rose doubled then levelled the scores, and although Cayton regained the lead, Rose completed his hat-trick to earn James Prethero’s side a point.

Harry Pollard was man of the match for Riding, as he had a strong game in central midfield.

Fylingdales Reserves earned a 2-1 home win against Heslerton.

Tom Dosser put the hosts in front, but Josh Beach made it 1-1.

Mark McCarthy restored the home side’s lead from the penalty spot.

Josh Hopley was man of the match for Fylingdales.

Ayton fought back from a goal down to earn a 5-2 home win against Hull University.

Josh Phizacklea put the students in front with a 20-yard strike on 10 minutes, but Mike Grayshan set up Tyson Stubbings to level in the 25th minute.

Niall Prentice’s cracking 20-yard strike into the top corner of the net made it 2-1 to Ayton at half-time.

Grayshan struck five minutes into the second half, after fine play from Dan Pollard, but Hull Uni replied with a Kieran Reynolds strike after a defensive mix-up.

Left-back Chris Milburn, who was Ayton’s man of the match, then set up Stubbings for his second to give Ayton some breathing space, and five minutes from time Dan Pickard made the game safe for the hosts.

Sam Gowlanb was man of the match for Hull Uni.

Scarborough Sports Barrowcliff won 3-1 at Alma.

Josh Bowmaker volleyed the visitors in front after good work from Craig Spooner, and Chris Hannam’s header made it 2-0, the chance created by fine link-up play between Dean Johnson and Sheldon Fielding.

Sports made it 3-1 on 75 minutes, Hannam shooting across goal and into the net after good play from Johnson and Zac Hansen.

Man of the match Keith Savage struck a late consolation for Alma, having impressed as right-back and then later in left midfield despite being a centre-back by trade.

The star man for Sports was Jack Newlove. who played well at right-back and then impressed with a stunning save when moved into goal.

Newlands Park maintained their impressive start to the division one season when they beat Commercial by a 7-0 scoreline.

As well as their 100 per cent record, they are also yet to concede a goal in their opening four outings.

Adam Stride opened the scoring, before Stew Bates bagged four goals in a row to make it 5-0.

Stride’s seconds and strike from Kile Fields completed a solid day at the office.

Striker James Pinder was man of the match for the victors, while Kyle May also impressed in the middle of the park.

West Pier picked up a 7-1 win in their game against Whitby Wanderers.

Cameron Dobson led the way for Paddy Parke’s men with a treble, with Rob Speight adding a brace. Ryan Baldry and Dave Bell also hit the net.

Lloyd Henderson was Pier’s star man at centre-back.

Lee Brennan turned on the style for Fylingdales as they won 11-0 against struggling Tennyson.

Brennan hit five goals from the right side of midfield, with doubles from Tom Hodgson, Kyle Clacherty and Jamie Agar taking Fylingdales well out of reach.
