Sunday League: Roscoes Bar edge past Spa in cup shootout

Roscoes Bar battled from a goal down twice before finally overcoming Scarborough Spa 4-2 on penalties after the scores were locked at 3-3 in the Kenward Cup thriller.

Striker Jake Acton put the visitors ahead in the first half but although Carl Hepples’ penalty levelled the scores, Acton’s second restored Spa’s lead before half-time.

Gary Hepples’ header, from a Matty Rowley cross, levelled the scores once again, and the former Scarborough Athletic midfielder’s second headed goal put Roscoes ahead for the first time.

Just as it looked like Lee Paterson’s team were going to progress, the player-boss’ backpass bobbled and allowed Spa’s star man Acton in to take the game penalties with his hat-trick goal, beating keeper Dave Pickard in a one-one-one.

Tom Allen missed the opening spot-kick for Roscoes, but Matty Rowley, Oli Morfitt, Sean Rowley, and Martin Hadrick - with the winning penalty, were all successful, while Richard Tolliday and Dom Wood were the only successful penalty-takers for Spa.

Keeper Pickard, who saved one of the spot-kicks, was the pick of the home team.

West Riding cruised to a 7-0 win in their Goalsports Trophy game at fellow second division side Ayton.

Jack South lobbed in the opener on 10 minutes for the visitors, with further goals from Josh Foley and Aiden McCallion making it 3-0 at the interval.

A hat-trick from central midfielder Jack Ramos and a second for Foley wrapped up the win for the away team, who had Liam Buglass on top form in midfield.

Second division leaders Trafalgar Reserves boosted their goal difference advantage over second-placed Scarborough Sports Barrowcliff with a 9-0 home win agaionst Cayton Corinthians.

Danny Glendinning smashed in four goals for the hosts, with strike-partner Mikey Barker helping himself to a brace, as did Jamie Wray.

The other Traf scorer was Sam Pickard. The pick of the Traf goals was Glendinning’s opener, which saw around 15 passes exchanged before he smashed the ball in from five yards.

Centre-back Damien Robinson was named as the Traf man of the match by boss Col Jenkinson, who said he dominated at the back and set the tone from the first minute.

Scarborough Sports Barrowcliff maintained their fine form with a hard-earned 3-0 home win against an improving The Alma.

Sean Naylor opened the scoring for the hosts two minutes before half-time, and on the hour mark Naylor set up Josh Bowmaker to double the Barrowcliff side’s lead.

The second goal saw some fine approach play from Ryan Link, Mark Wade and Sam Taylor before man of the match Naylor set Bowmaker.

Naylor wrapped up the points in the 85th minute, taking control of the ball with his back to goal and turning neatly before lashing home past the stand-in Alma keeper Keith Savage, who had put in an impressive display.

Debutant left-back Grant Dexter was the man of the match for Alma.

Hull University pulled off a shock 4-0 win at Newlands Park Reserves.

Salim Elbalamouni opened the scoring for the visitors and Jake Douglas added a second to put the away side in control at the half-time break.

The depleted hosts started strongly in the second half, but failed to break through and Corey Dennis sealed the win with a third on the counter attack for the students, who polished off the win with a last-minute goal from the impressive George Friend.

Krishan Shant was the man of the match for the Uni team while Paul Hill also shone in defence.

Young striker Jamie Deyes was the star man for Dave Gaddass’ home side.

Division one title-holders Trafalgar maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a hard-earned 2-0 win at West Pier.

Robbie Hawkes, making his first start of the season for Traf, put the visitors ahead in the first half at a blustery Flixton ground with an 18-yard strike.

Playing with the wind against them Traf doubled their lead after the interval when new signing Mikey Anderson made a strong run before squaring his pass for Rob Pinder to finish neatly.

Defender Alex Sheader was named as the Traf man of the match as he kept Pier’s dangerous striker Luke Delve quiet throughout the game.

Newlands also kept up their 100 per cent record with a 9-1 home win against Whitby Wanderers.

Drew McCoubrey banged in a hat-trick for Newlands as did fellow striker Adam Stride, with midfielder Stefan Moon adding a brace and sub Matty Shone also on target for the victors at Snainton.

Rob Ingham, making an impressive debut for the Wanderers, scored the visitors’ only goal in the second half, who also had Mikey Kilpatrick on top form, the winger playing the first half on the left flank and the second period on the right.

McCoubrey was named as the Newlands man of the match but right wing-back Johnny Manson also put in a great shift for the hosts.

Fylingdales eased away from the wrong end of the table with a 7-1 home victory against struggling Commercial.

Lee Brennan opened the scoring for the villagers, and although the visitors levelled through Stu Wallace further goals from Barry Heyes and Jamie Agar, the latter netting direct from a corner, put the hosts in charge at half-time.

Heyes’ second goal made it 4-1 and the an own goal and a Dave Welham brace wrapped up the scoring for the hosts.

Central midfielder Jake Faichney was the Fylingdales star man but boss John Cuffling was quick to praise his whole team’s efforts to see off a determined Commercial outfit.

Mikey Clark was named as Commercial’s star player.
