Sunday League: West Riding and Traf Reserves lead the way

Scarborough Sunday League second division leaders Trafalgar Reserves and second-placed West Riding continued their flawless starts to the season with convincing wins at Ayton and Hull Uni respectively.

Former Pickering Town striker Liam Salt banged in seven goals for Traf’s second string in a 15-1 rout at Ayton, while Mikey Barker smashed in five and man of the match Alex Wray scored the other three.

Niall Prentice scored for the home side.

Traf boss Col Jenkinson said: “Credit to Ayton as the bigger the margin got the more they had a go and never gave up.”

Star man Luke Jones scored five goals as West Riding eased to a 10-3 win at Hull Uni.

Teenagers Jack South and Alistair Jennings scored two apiece, while James Seymour notched the other.

A George Thompson free-kick made it 1-1 for Uni, but the visitors had raced into a 5-1 lead before Ed Burrows pulled another goal back, Uni man of the match Burrows pulling it back to 8-3 with his second strike.

The pick of the Riding goals was a 25-yard free-kick from Jones, which fizzed into the top corner of the net.

Roscoes Bar left it late to earn a 1-1 home draw against Newlands Park Reserves.

Gary Hepples struck two minutes from time to salvage a point for Lee Paterson’s side.

The visitors had a strong shout for a first-minute penalty when Ryan Sanderson appeared to have been brought down by keeper Dave Pickard, but the referee turned down the protests of the Newlands players.

In an end-to-end match both sides had chances, but Newlands went ahead midway through the second half when a stray backpass allowed Adam Stride in to score.

Hepples slid his shot under the Newlands keeper in the 88th minute after a great through-ball from man of the match Andrew Rowley.

Sixteen-year-old defender Ellis Sellers was named as man of the match for Newlands.

Roscoes Bar boss Lee Paterson said: “We missed numerous chances in the first and second half, but it was a good game to watch.

“We dominated the first half with chances but they came to life in the second half.”

Heslerton strolled to a 7-0 home win against Alma, with Dan Blanchard and Josh Bown scoring two goals apiece for the hosts.

Man of the match Keelan Clive, 16, also notched along with Mike Webster and Gareth Driver.

Cayton Corinthians earned a 5-2 home win against Scarborough Spa, Josh Venner notching twice for the home side.

Tyler Hanlon, Simon Stubbs and a Brett Crowe penalty completed the scoring for the villagers.

Josh Bowmaker’s five-goal haul helped Scarborough Sports Barrowcliff to an 8-4 home win against Fylingdales Reserves.

Bowmaker scored the first five goals for the hosts as they pulled clear in the second half after being locked at 3-3 at the interval.

A great free-kick from Callum Ogden found Ryan Cook to score from a header for Dales and the villagers soon got on level terms when 16-year-old striker Ben Thompson netted a quickfire double before half-time.

The visitors pulled it back to 5-4 through their man of the match Thompson but Dom Leith’s spot-kick, despite Dales protests that Cook had played the ball, gave Sports some breathing space, Sean Mennall’s goal and a Zac Hansen strike securing the three points.

Bowmaker was man of the match for Sports alongside Sheldon Fielding.

West Pier booked their place in the second round of the FA Sunday Cup with a 1-0 success against Commercial.

A second-half penalty from Martin Cooper made the difference on the day, though Pier had their opportunities to add a few more.

Centre-back Sam Hyde, midfielder Paul Cassidy and striker Luke Delve all impressed for the victors.

In division one, Fylingdales bagged a 4-2 victory on the road against Klosters.

After missing a flurry of early chances, Klosters fell behind when Lee Brennan his the net for Fylingdales.

Dan Peel pulled the home side level but Dales were back in front a minute before half-time when Kyle Clacherty poked home.

The visitors were the better side in the second half and moved 3-1 up through a penalty from Lewis Peel.

More indecisive defending gifted Dales a fourth goal when Tom Hodgson volleyed home and although Sam Garnett powered home a late header, it was too little for a well-below-par Klosters.

Gaz Lee at centre-back was Fylingdales’ star man.

Itis itis had too much for Whitby Wanderers when they won 5-3.

Visitors Itis itis moved two goals clear in the first 15 minutes, but Jack Wilson trimmed the lead and a 30-yard drive from Jericho Keys in the second half levelled matters.

The Whitby side then went ahead when Ste Ross drove across the keeper, but Itis itis hadn’t finished and they bagged three late goals to wrap up the win.
