STAR Woodleigh School footballer Tom Hoggard has been picked for the national independent schools under-14 squad.
Tom, 13 from Pickering, was part of the North- east Independent Schools’ team which took part in the Repton Festival in March.
Eight representative teams, made up of the best 13-year-old footballers from prep schools throughout the country took part. Tom’s team won three matches against tough opposition.
There were scouts watching from Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Aston Villa, Derby County and Notts County.
After the festival, the best players from each region were called up to a national representative squad and Tom is one of only three left-wingers to be picked.
Tom said: “I thought the Repton Festival was a very high quality tournament and I’m delighted to play for the national squad with such good players. I think it’s such an achievement and in the future and I’m hoping to play at a higher level.”
Tom Tolkien, football coach at Woodleigh, said: “It is a fantastic achievement and we wish Tom all the best in his national career.”
North-east Independent Schools football coach Phil Garner said: “The 22 who played at Repton are a real credit to the region, their schools, themselves and their families. Our performances against London and the North-west were outstanding against top-class opposition. The two wins and two draws is our best-ever festival performance and against far stronger opposition.”
