Scarborough Pindar men open up with Yorkshire League win

Scarborough Pindar men started their Yorkshire Tennis League campaign with a superb 5-4 win at Roundhay.

The team’s first pair of Jonathan Mumby and Patrick Robinson were in superb form and dispatched their three opposing pairs with relative ease.

Jim Mellor was joined by his usual partner Steve Mills and they won the one rubber then lost the next before taking their third in one of the tie-breaks to seal the victory.

Third couple Roger Amstell and partner Jon Conyers were not so fortunate.

They lost their tie-break and came home empty-handed but played their part in a very successful first outing.

The team travel to Sheffield for their next match.

The Driffield League was once again hit by rain although some teams battled on.

Scarborough Pindar men’s A team were at Cherry Burton who narrowly beat them earlier in the Division One season.

The team were without captain Mellor and Mills but still came away with a great result taking five rubbers without completing the rest of the games due to rain.

Dave Thompson partnered Will Reay and took their three rubbers, while Adam Tildsley playing with Roger Amstell and Paul Reddish partnering Bryan Edwards took a rubber each sealing the match.

Filey men remain unbeaten so far and look certain for promotion from division seven.

This week they were at home on the grass to Sledmere B and took the match 7-2.

They continued their match despite the persistent rain in order to complete the fixture and not add to the backlog of unplayed matches that have to be rearranged.

Kevin Brown and Mike Newby were in fine form and completed their three matches without dropping a rubber.

David Hudghton partnered Mark Lewis and took two rubbers as did Paul Owen and John Sellers.

This fine result leaves the team in good shape when they move to their new hard courts and club room next year.

In the ladies section Scalby A are having a fine season consolidating their position in division one by beating visitors Malton A 7-2.

The partnership of Jackie Speakman and Lynn Day, unbeaten so far this season, were in great form and won all their three rubbers again. Jane Stockdale and partner Joy Sharples won a very creditable two rubbers as did Sue Jackson and Sue Kendall.

Scarborough Pindar ladies are also going well in division three but were unlucky to lose 5-4 to Driffield LTC this round.

One of their players went to the wrong Driffield club so left the team with only two couples.

Fiona Gamwell played with Helen Neal and took two rubbers as did Helen Reay and Zoe Hill. So the extra couple could have made all the difference.

This should still leaves the team in second place, still in contention for promotion.
