Ryedale hot-shots net district triumph
Ryedale School’s year 8 basketball team travelled to George Pindar School, Eastfield, for the Scarborough and district finals and the Ryedale STARS netted top spot.
After the recent success in the Ryedale & Whitby partnership tournament, Ryedale were hopeful of another victory.
Playing Pindar in the first semi-final, Ryedale dominated both halves with the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams playing a strong defence with fast offensive play. Ryedale took an early advantage with the ‘B’ team breaking quickly. Ben Overfield and Maurice Calton-Seal created gaps in Pindar’s defence and capitalised on Jacob Potter’s strong rebounding.
Ryedale started the second half 20-2 ahead and the ‘A’ team furthered this lead. Jake Harrison and Jake Gainford drove well and Tom Watson was strong under the basket.
David Holt and Zak Brewster also got in on the act, taking their opportunities well and making sure that possession was kept. Ryedale eventually won 40-2.
Malton beat Graham School in their semi-final, which set up a competitive final.
Ryedale had beaten Malton narrowly in the partnership tournament and this was repeated in the final.
Ryedale edged a close first half 10-8 with Joe Scatchard and Louis Feather contributing well to the points tally and Jack Peace commanded the game, dictating play where he could.
Malton started the second half strongly taking a 14-12 lead, but Ryedale came back again and entered the final 30 seconds ahead.
Ryedale looked to keep possession to take the game but gave it away, Malton drove towards the basket to even the score, but Jake Harrison prevented the basket from being scored and the final buzzer went with Ryedale winning 18-17.
Norton College hosted the Ryedale and Whitby year 11 basketball competition, with only Ryedale, Lady Lumley’s and Norton entering.
Lumley’s beat Norton heavily in the first game, Ryedale then defeated Norton 38-12. Jed Taylor Brown, Peter Pittaway and Cameron Bringloe-Holmes kept the scoreboard ticking along throughout the game.
This set up a final against Lumley’s. Ryedale took the early advantage with Jeremy Underwood and Jed Taylor-Brown working well on using the space provided by some good team movement. Lumley’s came back strongly so Ryedale only led 12-11 at half-time.
Ryedale dominated the second half with strong defence. Lumley’s were struggling to break down the Ryedale defence and the ball was being stolen on numerous occasions.
Ryedale broke quickly with Jake Woodward and Jack Hall providing opportunities for Ross Leckenby and Peter Pittaway. Lumley’s again came back strongly towards the end of the game but Ryedale finished as 27-17 winners. Both Ryedale and Lumley’s now progress to the Scarborough & district finals at Whitby College.
Ryedale also won the year 9 Scarborough & district basketball tournament at Lady Lumley’s.
Along with the hosts, Ryedale were joined by Filey and George Pindar in the finals.
Ryedale played Filey in the first game and overpowered their defence, who couldn’t stop the fast movement and powerful dribbling of the Ryedale side. Ryan Hamblett was particularly strong in this game, scoring eight points.
Having beaten Pindar in their semi-final, Lumley’s joined Ryedale in the final. Ryan Mintoft was very strong under the basket, winning the majority of rebounds for the ‘B’ team, while Rory Talling shone for the ‘A’ team. Ryedale eventually won the game 22-13.
Whitby College hosted Ryedale’s Year 10 netball team, with fixtures for the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams.
Ryedale were too strong in the ‘B’ game, winning 11-3. Alice Glover was player of the match, preventing Whitby’s attack from gaining any advantage.
It proved a closer game in the ‘A’ team fixture, where both teams played well. The scores were level at half-time but Ryedale pulled away in the second half with some good play from Eliza Dwyer and Megan Bell.
Rosie Collier was outstanding and was player of the match for Ryedale.
