Malton – now recognised as the self-styled food capital of Yorkshire – is boosting its image further with the launching of its own cookery school with the aim of encouraging more people to take up the skill.
Located in Saville Street, Malton Cookery School is being run in partnership with The Talbot Hotel and its James Martin Restaurant, with professional chef and tutor, Gilly Robinson being its leader.
The first series of courses starts on May 16 with an evening class and dinner when the Talbot’s head chef, Craig Atchinson, will be demonstrating and teaching kitchen skills and will then prepare a meal for the students.
Other courses will include a class for parents and children, summer entertaining, Sunday brunches, picnics and a course designed to take the stress out of making meals for the family.
There are classes specifically aimed at men and a “kids in the kitchen” class. During the Malton Food Lovers Festival being held at the end of May, there will be hourly courses and demonstrations featuring guest chefs.
“But most of all we shall be teaching how to shop for and cook with, the best fresh Yorkshire produce,” said Gilly. “Students will be using produce from the Talbot’s own gardens and fruit and vegetables bought in Malton shops.”
Of the new school, Gilly said: “The kitchen is very warm and friendly, with cooking appliances similar to those we have at home rather than a professional kitchen. When we break for coffee or lunch we all sit together round the kitchen table which gives everyone the chance to exchange ideas and ask questions. Above all, we want people to have fun and really love what they do.
She added: “We’re also open for exclusive use; perhaps friends who’ve got together to learn a particular skill or a corporate group activity away from the office. Our bespoke hen parties teach small groups fun things such as how to mix cocktails and make canapés.”
Gilly is also giving cookery demonstrations at this year’s Harrogate Flower Show at the end of April.
