It’s “Benidorm or Bust” for two intrepid travellers from Ryedale.

Paul Scatcherd and Martin Shipley, from Malton Transport, are swapping their haulage trucks for a very different kind of vehicle when they accept the challenge of the Blackpool to Benidorm Banger Rally in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

Dressed to impress as “Rock and Gravel” from Wacky Races, they will set off today on the 1,500 mile route in a £200 banger, a 51 plate Peugeot 206, which has been especially modified to resemble a large boulder.

“I am looking forward to crossing Spain in our car and seeing how we cope with what challenges are thrown at us on the way down,” said Paul.

“We thought it was a unique and original way to raise money and the car will certainly be quite a spectacle. We are hoping to raise £1,000 for this fantastic local cause and any support would be greatly appreciated.”

Anyone wishing to sponsor the team can do so via www.justgiving.com/Paul-Scatcherd.

Proceeds will go to St Catherine’s Hospice. The charity provides in and out-patient care to people with life-limiting illnesses and their families across Ryedale, Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Bridlington and Driffield.
