Investment in the Milton Rooms continues apace, says its chairman, who has also today issued an appeal for more volunteers.

Stephen Shaw says the board of trustees are currently applying to Yorventure for funding to buy 350 new chairs as well as placing an order for new canvas shopping bags to promote and raise cash for the arts venue in Malton’s Market Place.

He also revealed plans for a much-needed upgrade of the toilets - a programme dependent on outside funding - which has already began with the purchase of a new door for the men’s toilet.

A new carpet has also been installed in the venue’s office to provide a better working environment for volunteers.

“We are hoping to encourage more volunteers to come and be a part of our new dynamic future,” said Mr Shaw. “This gives them a nice atmosphere in which to work.”

Local businesses can also show their support, he added, by sponsoring one of the tables at the venue. In return, they will have their business’ name painted on the table.

Would-be volunteers are invited to sit down and go through a “skills audit check” which would identify their abilities, hobbies and how much time they could commit to see how they could fit in with the team and where, be it working front of house or in the office.
