Scampston Walled Garden is to star on BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World this Friday.
The episode which is devoted to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and its Partner Gardens will see television presenter and garden designer Joe Swift talk to Lady Legard and head gardener, Paul Smith.
Lady Legard was behind the bold move to commission a new, contemporary garden within the historic grounds of Scampston Hall, where there is a long history of engaging the top garden designers of the time, from ‘Capability’ Brown in the 18th century through to Piet Oudolf in the 21st.
Paul, who has been Head Gardener at Scampston for five years, said: “It was great to meet Joe and the team and it was a long day filming, but we’re really looking forward to seeing the finished item. Everyone at work is looking forward to seeing both the garden and me on TV, although I am not so sure about me!”
Laura Walden, from Gardeners’ World, said: “We chose to film at Scampston because it is one of the RHS’s Partner Gardens that looks particularly good in the autumn and the modern Walled Garden, with its intense planting, provides such a great contrast with the parkland and traditional gardens around Scampston Hall.”
Gardeners’ World will be on BBC Two on Friday at 8.30pm.
