Exhibit of the Week: Amphorae were used in the transportation of goods
When this strange looking object was first seen by one of the volunteers at Malton Museum he christened it the ‘Roman traffic cone’. He was holding it upside down and this hollow spike is in fact the lower part of a vessel known in Latin as an amphora, and has possibly been adapted later for some other use. Amphorae of this type were made in southern Spain, especially around Cadiz, and used to export the highly pungent fish-based products made there.
